CRSSP originally started from 1979 as the Remote Sensing Department at the Faculty of Geography UGM. Then, from 1985 to 1992, the Remote Sensing Department and the Cartography Department merged into the Department of Technical Geography, which manages the Cartography Study Program and Remote Sensing Study Program. In 1993, the two study programs were merged into the Cartography and Remote Sensing Study Program, under the Department of Cartography and Remote Sensing.

From 1996 to 2002, the CRSSP together with three other Study Programs within the Faculty of Geography (Physical Geography, Human Geography, and Regional Development Planning) were merged into a single study program called Geography Study Program, as a respond to the request of the Directorate General of Higher Education of Indonesia. In that period, Cartography and Remote Sensing became one of study major under the Geography Study Program, with the decree number 221/DIKTI/Kep/96. In 1998, the Geography Study Program earned the accreditation of “A” from the National Accreditation Board of Higher Education (BAN-PT) through decree No. 00762/Ak-I/UGMBO/VIII/1998.

In 2002, through the decree of UGM Rector Number 31/P/SK/HKTI/2002, Cartography and Remote Sensing major was again separated into a study program called Cartography and Remote Sensing Study Program (this is the official name of our study program until now, Appendix 1.3). In 2009, Cartography and Remote Sensing study program has been accredited “A” by Higher Education – National Accreditation Board (BAN-PT) with the decree No. 031/BAN-PT/Ak-XII/S1/x/2009, valid until 23 October 2014. This study program has also undergone a re-accreditation on November 15, 2014 and earned an “A” rank of accreditation level from BAN-PT and valid until November 14, 2019. The latest change of CRS Study Program status was in November 2015, where it was formally managed under the Department of Geographic Information Science (GISc) through UGM rector decree No. 1616/P/SK/HT/2015 about the establishment of the organizational structure of Faculty of Geography Universitas Gadjah Mada, dated 30 November 2015.
